Barry Young’s Direct Message to Christopher Luxon & Winston Peters: “Look at the Data”

Barry Young looks straight down the camera and delivers a direct message to New Zealand’s political leadership. He tells Christopher Luxon that his time is up - describing him as a one-term Prime Minister who has admitted he doesn’t need the job - and adds the blunt farewell: “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

He then turns to Winston Peters with a more hopeful appeal, urging him to “do the right thing for New Zealand,” look at the data, and help make the country whole again. Barry tells Peters that doing so would secure a lasting legacy and allow him to be remembered as a great man. A clear, personal call for political courage and data transparency.

Clip Transcipt:

[Liz Gunn] “But I want you to look down that camera and just send a message to Christopher Luxon and or Winston Peters. Luxon is, I think he’s a no-hoper. We all know he doesn’t care about Kiwis. But send a brief message about what you want.

[Barry Young] I think Christopher Luxon is done. I think he’s a one-term shot and he’s, yeah. And I think he knows it as well. I mean, he’s basically admitted himself, he doesn’t need to do this job. Thank God for that, because we don’t need you to do this job either, Christopher Luxon, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

[Gunn] Brilliant. What about Winston Peters? Maybe there’s a little sliver of hope there. Send it to Winston directly.

[Young] Winston Peters, if you ever watch this, and I hope that you do, do the right thing for New Zealand. And you can still be a great man. You’ve done some good things in the past. I need you to help New Zealand to make it whole again. And if you do that, you will be remembered in history forever.

And this will be your legacy. And this will be a great, great time in history for you to do this. So please, please, please just look at the data and do the right thing. You don’t have to believe me, but look at the data.
